What about a damage deposit ?

We do not take a damage deposit.  We trust that you will look after the cottage just as we look after the cottage.  We trust that if there are any damages or breakages, you will let us know and agree to replace like for like (we fully expect that there will be minor breakages such as the odd plate or glass so we do not expect you to pay for these!).  Also if for some reason, the cottage is left in a sorry state after you leave, we expect you to reimburse us the cost in time and money for putting things right for the next guests.
